Connor Whited bail increased to 1 million, 15, 000

As I reported earlier this morning, Connor Whited was arraigned this afternoon for the murder of Brett Keiling.  He is also charged with a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon; a club.

Deputy District Attorney Jessica Acosta was present for arraignment and requested a bail increase in the amount of 1 million,  15,000. Defense reserved an OR/bail hearing for the future but submitted the matter to the Court today. Judge Timothy Canning granted the People's request. The prosecutor for the case is A.J. Kamada.

Conflict Counsel Supervising Attorney Meagan O'Connell has the police report but she requested discovery including body camera of EPD Officer Cameron Hooks, all color photos from EPD Detective Ron Harpham's report, DNA analysis, Dr. Super's report, rap sheet of the victim and the rap sheet of Troy Welsch.

If it is the Troy Welsch in the Humboldt Superior Court system, he has a lengthy criminal court record includes assault and sex offense charges. A Troy Welsch identified from Hoopa was arrested for failure to register as a sex offender and a Troy Welsch with the same name also has a 4th Street address listed for Eureka. There is a Facebook profile and photo for a Troy Welsch in Eureka.

"I will need to talk to you as soon as possible," Whited said to Ms. O'Connell. He was shackled and cuffed.When Ms. Acosta asked that the defendant be ordered to appear in court for future dates in case he posted bail,Whited shrugged as if indicating where else he would be.

Time was not waived. Intervention is on October 30; preliminary hearing is on November 4.

United States Attorney David Capp announced:
Brett Keiling, 49, of Granger, Indiana, was sentenced by District Judge Robert Miller, Jr. to 27 months’ imprisonment (time served) and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to the felony offense of threatening to assault an employee of the United States with intent to impede the performance of official duties. On January 24, 2011, Keiling made a telephone threat to an employee of then Congressman Joseph Donnelly’s office. Keiling has been in federal custody since that date.

Keiling is subject to numerous conditions while on supervised release, including having no contact with any public official’s office without first obtaining the permission of the United States Probation Office.

This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Barbara Brook.
