"I am in max, I just need to make a phone call"

Flipping his hair in court which isno longer braided in jail, Elijah Stonebear Williams, entered court for his arraignment.

Williams looked down as Visiting Judge Joseph Hurley read the charges against him.

Initially, he asked Judge Hurley continue his arraignment until he could hire a private lawyer. He kept refusing a court appointed lawyer.

"My first time in court, Sir," said Williams.

"Your first time in court and you are facing multiple life charges." responded Judge Hurley. Again, he asked if Williams wanted a court appointed lawyer.

"I am in max, I just need to make a phone call," said Williams. Then he asked the Judge for a phone number to a specific lawyer.

Judge Hurley said it is not his role to carry phone numbers.

At this time, Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo came to William's rescue. The Judge allowed Mr. Russo to speak to Williams as a friend of the court.

The Public Defender's office was appointed. Williams entered a 10 day waiver for his preliminary hearing.

Intervention is scheduled for May 24 at 1:30 p.m. The preliminary hearing is  scheduled for May 31 at 9:15.

Deputy District Attorney Tobias Hasler was present for the People in court today.
