Inmate attempted suicide last night, was transported to hospital and received treatment

Heard that an inmate attempted suicide by hanging at Humboldt County Jail last night.

I attempted to confirm directly from the jail and could not get confirmation or denial from Sgt. Griffin, who was on duty. "If something like that happened, and it warranted a press release, we would put out a press release," he said.

I contacted Sheriff William Honsal. "There was a suicide attempt in the jail last night. The subject was transported to the hospital and received treatment. He should be back in custody now. A press release will be coming out this morning. "

HCSO Press Release:

On Friday, July 14, 2017 at about 2201 hours, while performing a routine cell check, a correctional deputy discovered a male inmate in his cell with a blanket tied around his neck in an apparent suicide attempt.  Additional deputies and medical staff quickly responded to the scene and the subject was lowered to his bunk once the blanket was removed.  The subject was in and out of consciousness as life-saving efforts were administered by staff until paramedics arrived on scene and took over care.  The subject was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital via ambulance and treated.  The subject was stabilized and later discharged from the hospital and returned to the correctional facility.  The subject remains under close observation for safety concerns at this time.  Without the quick response and successful life-saving measures initiated by correctional facility staff, this incident could have had a dire outcome.

    1. No way to know the identity of the inmate unless that information is released. Doubt it, since medical information is confidential.
