Inmate in custody at Humboldt County jail dies last night at hospital after CPR attempt

Reports are that a male inmate died while in custody sometime last night.  CPR was started in the jail and the inmate was pronounced dead at the hospital.




Update (12/22/16):

Humboldt County Coroner’s have identified the inmate who died on Tuesday, December 13th as 44 year old Thomas Robert Smith.  The cause of death is pending toxicology reports.   
Coroners have been unable to locate next of kin.  Smith may have family in the Seattle area.  If anyone has contact information for any next of kin, please contact the Coroner’s Office at 707-445-7242.

HCSO Press Release:

On Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at approximately 5:15 p.m. Correctional Deputies noticed an inmate experiencing medical issues in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Medical staff was summoned and began treatment. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were requested due to the inmates declining condition. EMTs transported the inmate to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, December 16, 2016. Toxicology reports have been requested for processing. The cause of death is unknown pending the autopsy and toxicology reports.
The identification of the decedent will be released once next of kin has been notified
