EPD cars with sirens going down Fifth and H

EPD cars with sirens going up Fifth and H streets in Eureka...reports of active shooter near Central and Sutter.

Suspect who allegedly shot at an apartment manager's office then shot at deputies who responded to the scene; he then retreated into his apartment. Location Redwood Creek apartment.

Undersheriff William Honsal made a brief statement to press on the scene. He is not talking any more questions at the moment.

 HCSO's Selena Zorilla-Mendoza said that currently residents are being evacuated to the shelter and  HCSO will release information throughout the day. No reports of any injuries.

From HCSO:

At approximately 0900 hours this morning the Sheriff's Office received a call of shots fired at the Redwood Creek Apartments on Sutter Rd in McKinleyville. Deputies arrived on scene and set a perimeter around the apartments. The suspect emerged from his apartment and shot at the deputies. The deputies returned fire and the suspect retreated into his apartment. The suspect has barricaded himself in his apartment. Deputies were not injured during this engagement.
Crisis negotiators and Mental Health are on scene along with CHP, EPD, APD, State Parks, and the HCSO SWAT team has been deployed.
Residents in the area please shelter in place. The Sheriff's Office is in the process of evacuating residents, but do not evacuate without being contacted by law enforcement.

McKinleyville Resdents:
Sutter Rd from Central Ave to Park Rd will be closed to traffic due to a active shooter/barricaded subject at Redwood Creek Apt.
Residents in the area will receive notification to shelter in place.

HCSO holding press conference right now. Undersheriff William Honsal said suspect has not communicated since he retreated into his apartment.
