Brent Holdridge arrested for probation violation, meth and marijuana charges

On February 3, 2020, at about 1:00 p.m., Detectives with the Eureka Police Department Problem Oriented Policing Team (POP) conducted a probation search of Brent John Holdridge’s apartment at the 600 block of 16th Street.  Holdridge (54 of Eureka) is on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) in Humboldt County for felon in possession of a firearm and possession of heroin for sales.

Frequently arrested Wade Harris' attorney is Heidi Holmquist-Wells. According to court minutes from yesterday, Mr. Manny Daskal was in court for Harris and waived his OR/bail hearing for one of his 2019 cases without prejudice.

The pre trial conference for February 5 was rescheduled for February 19.

Local attorney Michael Acosta arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale

Local attorney Michael Philip Acosta was arrested yesterday and booked into the Humboldt County jail for an alleged violation of HS11351, possession of a controlled substance for sale. This is a felony. Bail is $35,000. He posted bail and was on the second floorof the Courthouse by 1:30 p.m.

Most of the jurors fromthe David Kobak trial left. There was one juror leaving who spoke to me. That juror said, " We were amicable, we took our time and followed the law and the Judge's instructions."

David Kobak found guilty of second degree murder, special allegation is true

David Kobak was charged with Count 1, first degree murder of Fred Loftus.  Count 1 has a special allegation that Kobak "personally and intentionally discharged a firearm" causing great bodily injury or death to Loftus.

The jury was also given verdict forms for second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

The jury in the David Kobak case had some humor this morning when the one juror who has been late a few times said, "I am here." They started deliberations around 9 a.m. and took a break at 10:15 p.m.

Today is the 4th day of deliberations. Interested parties including alternate jurors here are outside Courtroom 1. Attorneys are inside the courtroom with the Judge.

DA says due to witness issues, case against Harwood would be difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt

Jury trial and a motion in limine was scheduled for Redway Garden and Feed owner Thomas Harwood on February 4. Instead the case resolved today with Harwood pleading to a lesser charge of wet and reckless for Count 1, Count 2 was dismissed, Count 3 deferred entry of judgement for 18 months, Count 4 dismissed with Harvey reservation and Count 5 was dismissed.

Public Defender to remain Patrick McTigue's attorney

Confirmation of counsel was scheduled for former Humboldt County Building and Planning employee Patrick McTigue. Deputy Public Defender appeared with McTigue. Deputy District Attorney Adrian Kamada is the prosecutor for the case; Deputy DA Jane Mackie appeared for the People. Dates remain set, for now.

The Grind will officially be on the market tomorrow

The Grind Cafe, located at 734 Fifth Street in Eureka,is known for homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. They also have coffee and breakfast items. A while ago, the owner Janeen was interested in selling but never listed the business. This morning she told me that tomorrow the Cafe will be officially on the market. The move is simply to be closer to family.

Last night, thanks to two irresponsible drunk/ high idiots, I was awakened at 1:45 with four EPD cars conducting a traffic stop and field sobriety test. Couldn't sleep, then had a long day at the courthouse. Two EPD cars when I came home. After that I thought, maybe one peaceful night, not going to happen. This is a daily occurrence in Eutweeka.

Today, the jury in the David Kobak case was to start deliberations at 10 a.m. One juror was late; she arrived at 10:15. They left for lunch at noon; came back at 1 p.m. There was a note from the jury at 1:18 p.m. Once again, they left at 4:15 p.m. and will return at 9 a.m.

Murder suspect Ronald Loureiro's blood sample and testing may lead to continuance of jury trial

Trial confirmation was scheduled for murder suspect Ronald Loueiro on February 3. An additional trial confirmation was scheduled at defense request for February 20. Jury trial is schedulef on March 16.

Three police cars on 6th Street conducting field sobriety test

Three police cars are outside 1335 6th Street Eureka right now and they have been here for at least 15 minutes. A male and female subject are detained, cuffed and getting a field sobriety test.

"The cause is unknown. We are treating it as a crime scene until additional investigation is completed."

Both Arcata Fire and Arcata Police responded to a call of a structure fire around 5:30 a.m.

APD Police Chief Brian Ahearn was at work and at the apartment complex located on the 100 block of Samoa Boulevard. "The cause is unknown. We are treating it as a crime scene until additional investigation is completed."

One person was transported to the hospital and another person was found dead in one of the apartments. Three units were damaged.
