"With all due respect to the Wiyot, their interpretation is incorrect" is CBE's response to the motion to dismiss

I did the above post on 2/16 about the Wiyot Tribe's motion to dismiss in one of the CBE lawsuits which is scheduled for 3/11/24.

At that time, Citizens for a Better Eureka Gail Rymer told me CBE attorney Bradley Johnson was out of town and she would get back to me this week. Today, I received a response with a quote for Housing for All initiative co-sponsor Mike Munson.

CBE Response:

With all due respect to the Wiyot, their interpretation is incorrect. The Housing for All Initiative supports the construction of housing downtown – 100% — while protecting the economic vitality of Eureka’s historic downtown.  It also exempts the Wyiot from the ballot measure.

“The City awarded the contract for developing the 5th and D parking lots and the 6th and L lot to the Wiyot Tribe. Our Housing for All initiative provides that those two lots will be exempt from the ballot measure as long as the Wiyot Tribe owns them, “ said Mike Munson, Initiative co-sponsor. "We support their efforts in building affordable housing in an environmentally friendly manner while protecting their heritage and keeping the work local.”

The city’s plan for downtown is badly flawed. The city would eliminate badly needed parking to build low and very low-income housing. More than 40 downtown merchants are suing the city because the loss of this parking will devastate their business.

The Housing for All initiative says we can keep the parking AND build badly needed housing.  The Initiative enables housing to be built alongside or above the parking lots, as is done in cities nationwide. That way, we protect Eureka’s downtown small businesses and create housing for working and middle-income families who want to live downtown but need parking so they can get to their jobs and get their kids to school and activities throughout the area.
