"To be unequivocally clear, I have not suffered a stroke. The nature of my facial paralysis makes it impossible for me to take a photo where it is not obvious, nor would I want to."

Please find April’s response to rumors that she is a stroke victim.  These rumors have been posted in the comments sections of various news outlets. “I am addressing you not just as a candidate but as someone who is committed to bringing equality, inclusion, and honesty to the bench in Humboldt County. My decision to enter this election was driven by a genuine desire to make a positive impact on our community.

However, I find myself addressing a matter that I never anticipated would take center stage - my own appearance. It's disheartening to see wild speculation and name-calling, but perhaps I was naive to assume that our political discourse could rise above such trivialities. Yet, I maintain a fundamental belief in the kindness and good intentions inherent in people.

I understand that curiosity may drive some comments about my appearance, and I want to believe that they aren't all meant to be cruel. However, I cannot ignore the more sinister undertones that have surfaced. I cannot help but wonder if my experience would be different if I were of a different gender. Regardless, here we are, and I acknowledge that people are naturally curious when confronted with something different. Certain speculations have gone beyond mere curiosity.

There are assertions that I am smirking and not taking this campaign or the position seriously. Even more troubling are rumors that suggest I have suffered a stroke, casting doubt on my mental faculties. Such assertions are not only false but dangerous and insulting to all individuals with disabilities. I extend an invitation to my opponent to denounce any supporters who are spreading these cruel and dangerous rumors. It's crucial that we maintain a level of decency and respect in our political discourse.

In an effort to address these comments on my appearance, let me provide some context. I was born with facial paralysis. As a child, I faced comments from other children, and my parents taught me to respond, "I was born this way." As I grew older, fewer people commented on my appearance, as most individuals had the sense not to focus on physical attributes.

To be unequivocally clear, I have not suffered a stroke. The nature of my facial paralysis makes it impossible for me to take a photo where it is not obvious, nor would I want to. My appearance has no bearing on my ability to perform my job or the seriousness with which I approach this election. I hope that this explanation will put an end to any attacks on my appearance and alleviate concerns that my smile suggests a lack of seriousness.

Recent developments underscore the importance of this race, and I urge everyone to focus on the substantive issues rather than trivial matters like candidates' appearances. Let us engage in a meaningful dialogue about the future of Humboldt County and the values we hold dear.”
