Breaking news. A female write in candidate steps in last minute to run against Gregory Kreis. She was at the elections office. And lists a P.O. Box in Arcata as the campaign address? She was at the election office today.
The write in candidate is Deputy District Attorney Jessica Watson, former hire by former DA Paul Gallegos. Write in rules are in Election Code Sections 8600-8700 according to Registrar, Clerk, Recorder Juan Cervantes. You can compare it to the information he provided to me in this post:

You can also take a second look at the original post I did on challenging judges in this election.

This is from Ballotpedia. org which I checked earlier before I knew Jessica Watson was running.
The method of judicial selection for the California Superior Courts is officially nonpartisan election of judges, though many judges join the court via gubernatorial appointment. Once judges are appointed, they compete in the next general election following appointment.
If an incumbent Superior Court judge files for re-election and draws no opponent, that race does not appear on the ballot. If the race is contested, the candidate who wins more than 50% of the vote is elected. If no candidate receives more than 50%, the top two compete in a runoff in the general election in November.
