HSU officer wounded was Officer Louis Altic, formerly with EPD
HSU officer Louis Altic's son is Ben Altic, who is with EPD. Officer Altic's family has been notified. I know Officer Altic from church as well as years of being on the Old Town beat and EPD.
Prayers for his family.
Operation Safe Streets, Eureka had already identified Officer Altic before my post.

Very relieved to hear that he's expected to make a full recovery.
ReplyDeletePrayers for Officer Altic and his family and thoughts for other LOE who have been confronted with what each and all fear.
ReplyDeleteI saw a comment about APD and HSU and why they don't always coordinate their activities.
I have no knowledge of the relationships but it seems to me that there is probably a letter or memo of understanding as to responsibilities for each and how the responses are handled. I've read about how local fire departments work together, so it's common practice.
It seems to me when things are rowdy on the Plaza on a weekend, having an older, wiser person there, someone who had authority from HSU but to some people, 'not police'. He might have an awareness of some of the people and be able to talk to them quietly, cooling things down. Someone like Officer Altic would build relationships with staff and academics so they'd trust him as they might not trust someone else. He would represent stability which people need to feel is there.
With his age, experience and background, he may mentor some of the younger police office. Not officially, but because it can be needed.
Here's a reference to a MOU from 2008 where the Arcata City council is discussing working with HSU on something:
"C. Discussion of Humboldt State University’s Request for Roadway and Utility Abandonments
and Entering Into a Memorandum of Understanding Between the City of Arcata and Humboldt
State University."
