Why is the HCDCC the biggest donor with $170,000 for a candidate in Orange County?

(Twitter)

"Democrats are raising more money than Republicans in all but one of Orange County’s nine state Senate and Assembly races, according to the latest fundraising reports filed with the state."

"Republicans still hold most of the county’s state legislative seats. But the California Democratic Party, labor organizations and individual donors are pouring money into several local races in hopes of flipping several seats to blue in the Nov. 3 election."

"In the pending rematch for California’s 29th Senate District, which covers much of northeast Orange County and parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, Democratic challenger Josh Newman took in twice as much money as GOP incumbent Ling Ling Chang in the reporting period that ran Feb. 16 through June 30."

"Newman raised $607,260 to Chang’s $269,308 haul over those four months. And he’s raised more than Chang, R-Diamond Bar, throughout the cycle, taking in $1.37 million to Chang’s $838,918."

"Newman’s biggest contribution was $170,000 from the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee. Other major contributions have come from labor groups and Democratic organizations. Less than 6% of Newman’s 568 donations came from out of state donors."

I have readers all over the state and other states. One reader follows my Humboldt blog and brought up some good points.

"There is a California State Senate Candidate in Orange County. His name is Josh Newman. He is trying to re-claim his Senate seat. He won it in 2016. He voted for the Gas Tax Increase. In 2018, he was successfully recalled. There is now a Republican incumbent trying to hold on to her seat. The District has been trending Democrat. They now have a 7.2% registration advantage.

"Fundraising totals are now posted. Newman the Democrat raised more than the Republican. This is what caught my eye. His largest contribution was $170,000 from the Humboldt County Democractic Central Committee. FOR A SEAT IN FULLERTON, CA!"

"Winning this seat is a big deal. Losing it in the recall was a black eye. It might make the difference in the Democrats maintaining their super-majority, so I understand it if this is strategic. My concern is it is almost money-laudering, if they are trying to hide the true source of funds, so it doesn't appear where it came from. However, Parties have to report that as well."
