EPD made double the number of arrests than APD and HCSO
I think most people in our community understand the Eureka Police Department is an exceptionally busy and proactive organization. However, the following information might surprise some as it paints a vivid picture of just how very active our hardworking officers are.
According to the Humboldt County Jail booking records by agency for 2017 (provided courtesy of the Sheriff's Office), EPD officers made more than DOUBLE the number of arrests than the next two closest agencies combined! EPD made 3,424 custodial arrests last year as compared to 1,568 by the Arcata Police Department and 1,555 by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office. This doesn't include the approximately 1,200 misdemeanor cases I was told our City Attorney filed in 2017 for various Eureka Municipal Code violations (citations).
While we know many of our problems can't be solved with handcuffs, criminal behavior has to be addressed and I'm sure law abiding Eurekans appreciate EPD's efforts.
