Citizen-witness helps EPD idenitfy alleged car thief and assists with arrest
On Monday, 07/11/2016, at about 1:15 p.m., Eureka Police Department officers
were dispatched to an in-progress vehicle burglary at 7th/J Streets, Eureka. The
burglary was witnessed by the manager of a nearby business who saw the thief,
later identified a Shane William Casey (age 39 of Eureka), forcing entry into a
locked sport utility vehicle.
While a co-worker called the police, the manager went outside to confront Casey.
The manager followed Casey and pointed him out to a responding officer who
detained Casey near the corner of 6th/G Street. The SUV’s owner was contacted
and he confirmed several dollars’ worth of spare change had been taken from his
vehicle. The stolen coins were subsequently recovered from Casey’s pockets.
Casey was arrested for 459 PC –Burglary (a felony) as well as probation violation
and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
EPD would also like to extend our appreciation to the citizen-witness for his
invaluable assistance with the identification and apprehension of the suspect.
