Thomas Kane represented by Benjamin Okin, plead guilty today in the hit and run death of Gabe Jackson

I have not been posting on this case because there have just continuances since arraignment which was on June 8, 2015. Today, yet another disposition and reset hearing for Thomas Kane at 2 p.m. Instead he plead guilty; sentencing is scheduled for August 31.

Kym Kemp beat me to posting on this, kudos Kym, but the Fortuna hit and run case took precedence.

In December Mr. Benjamin Okin took this case over from MS. Kathleen Bryson. Mr. Okin is also representing Kade Chandler and a suspect in the recent Fortuna hit and run case.

Yet another disposition and reset hearing scheduled for Thomas Kane charged with the death of Gabe Jackson

A  disposition and reset hearing was scheduled for this afternoon in the Thomas Kane case. Once again, a disposition and reset was scheduled for January 26, 2015.

Kane is charged with the death of Southern Humboldt resident Gabe Jackson.

Count 1 is a felony, hit and run with injury or death. Count 2 is accidental death, knowledge and concealment, a misdemeanor.

Deputy District Attorney David Christensen is prosecuting the case. Kane has retained the services of private attorney, Ms. Kathleen Bryson.

CHP Press Release:

On October 5, 2014, at approximately 1230 hours,Thomas Kane was driving a Toyota Sequoia SUV southbound on Buck Mountain Road, south of Alderpoint Road, at approximately 30 miles per hour.  Gabriel Jackson was driving a Honda ATV northbound on Buck Mountain Road, south of Alderpoint Road, at an unknown speed.  For reasons still under investigation, the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.  Gabriel Jackson was fully ejected from the ATV and sustained fatal injuries.
The CHP established by investigation that when the collision occurred, instead of reporting it, Mr. Kane moved the ATV “over the edge of the embankment,” said Keat.
At approximately 10:05 a.m. on October 6, Marjorie Jackson, mother of Gabe Jackson reported the traffic accident to 911. However, the CHP report above alleges that the original time the collision occurred was approximately 12:30 p.m. on the fifth. “We have an ear witness,” Keat explained. Later, he says, “A search warrant for Kane’s vehicle confirmed the collision.”

  1. Isn't Kade Chandler the guy that is in trouble for the DUI that killed two girls out on Hwy 36? Not the driver of a hit and run? I follow all of your blogs, you are very thorough with whats happening in our court system and I appreciate you. This confused me as I think maybe a couple cases got mixed up?

  2. Good catch. The text in the post is correct but I will fix the headline.

Thank you. Both are represented by Ben Okin and I think I was checking on both cases that day.
