Teachers in Humboldt County interested in bringing civics to their K-12 classrooms this school year are invited to connect with the California Superior Court for Humboldt County. As California marks the nation's 250th anniversary, judges from the Humboldt County Superior Court are getting ready for an outreach challenge sponsored by Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero's Power of Democracy Civic Learning Initiative.
The Superior Court for Humboldt County has pledged to connect with at least 250 K–12 public school students beginning in August through the end of 2026.
“By sending judges into classrooms to talk with teachers and students about the rule of law and the Constitution, we're showing students that what they're learning isn't just history — it's at work in their own community every day.”
— Hon. Kelly L. Neel, Presiding Judge, California Superior Court for Humboldt County.
To help judges meet the challenge, the Court is placing emphasis on September when the judicial branch celebrates Constitution Month. Teachers are encouraged to submit requests for other months too, as judges are available for classroom visits throughout the entire school year. Teachers are encouraged to submit their requests early, as availability is limited.
The Challenge is supported by the Power of Democracy’s Judges in the Classroom program. Year-round, this program offers interactive lessons such as mock trials, age-appropriate discussions about constitutional rights, and Q&A sessions where students can learn firsthand about a judge's role.
Teachers can request a judge to visit their classroom at powerofdemocracy.org/pod250.
The Humboldt County Superior Court, part of the State of California’s judicial branch, is the court of general jurisdiction for Humboldt County. With seven judges and one commissioner, and a dedicated staff of over 85 people, the Court handles over 20,000 cases annually, safeguarding individual rights, protecting our communities, and resolving disputes that arise in our county.
Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero's Power of Democracy Civic Learning Initiative brings quality civics education to K–12 classrooms. By connecting students directly with judges, it brings the foundations of the judicial system to life through real-world interaction — empowering educators and inspiring the next generation of informed, active citizens.
