Racist, sexist drivel that the local left gives a pass to regularly

These are from the Arcata election post.

Lorna Bryant and NAACP have ignored past examples of racist comments on LOCO. Do these comments about you also get a pass Lorna?

Is this the racist, sexist, homophobic drivel and controversial comments LOCO advertisers such as Ramones, Shafers, Maples Service, Green Road Consulting  continue to be "proud" to support with their dollars?

Not seeing certain names on that daily advertising list anymore. I am not the only one who notices those changes. Could be those advertisers care about their names not being next to racist and sexist garbage or they figured out ads on LOCO didnt get the expected results they hoped.

There is plenty of competition with local  print, radio  TV and online options where the same advertisers can go instead of reaching out to anonymous trolls and a small clique that comes to comment multiple times to engage with each other.

This one comment on Facebook was hilarious but then it isn't anonymous.

One of Thunderdome's most permanent residents gave a more accurate description of LOCO. They should use it instead of their current description.

August 11: Once again, comments were deleted after I had to point them out. Shouldn't be my job to moderate Cleary's site with 5 staffers.

  1. If the businesses actually did a cost benefits analysis I'm sure they dumped Loco in a second. All you really need to do is ask anyone who's lived here for more than 25 years for suggestions on who to go for what you need. Word of mouth and past experience wins out over desperate advertising on online liberal rags, but if you're liberal progressive socialist you don't mind throwing your money down a rat hole and supporting such drivel.

  5. I agree with your first sentence Rusty because I actually have advertisers who check stats. Recently one advertiser told me that in two days, he got more response from my site than he did all month on LOCO and later on, overall my stars were number #1 compared to others. I built my site from scratch and my following from nothing. I dont pay for google keywords to boost my site.

Word of mouth does work, but not always. A business is always growing and there are always new people who may not know about your business. The problem we have locally is that many business owners dont get advertising. They fall for slick ad sales from slick sales persons and glossy ad materials and advertise with who they like. Money is money, nothing personal.

They also turn over their advertising to their friends who make money off placing their ads but these people are decades behind what is current and cutting edge. Newspapers are dinosaurs, radio can be effective selectively, TV and online ads do not always translate into business because all these ads are random views. People who do well, whether they advertise or not are, in general, are businesses that are professional and pay attention and are willing to try new sources of revenue.

The number of comments is not an indication of who is reading or watching. People locally tend to mention the same media outlets they are familiar with when asked whether they read or saw something somewhere else.

I have had people say to my face that it is not the quality of my reporting or stats but because they identify as part of the local left, that they will not advertise with me. Their loss, not mine. Others tell me I am too honest and do not kow tow to the good ole boys and gals and call out the good ole boys and gals. That is what reporting is, being independent.

  6. Hank and Ryan had the audacity to question why people hired me. It is because I am good at what I do. LOCO doesn't have time to moderate
but has the time to try and impact my livelihood?

The local left gossips and tries to spin my reporting because they are threatened. I kept quiet in the beginning but real reporters like the ones in local TV or Kym just go about their business because they value good competition and are professional.

No one owns me otherwise I would be rich.

Look at the difference in LOCO when Kym was at LOCO and now.

With multiple staffers, look at the lack of output and the quality of output certain outlets put out. With the legalization of cannabis and newer people moving here, shitty customer service and the way business is done in Humboldt is not going to be the norm. The busineses that continue to advertise, especially on LOCO, with this constant racist, sexist crap can continue to be associated with trash. The local left continues to show their hypocrisy by ignoring to call out the regular bs in Thunderdome while whining about other perceived slights, whether they exist or not.

I have deleted comments and I did call out a regular commenter on his comments. He no longer comments on this site. I may politically disagree with Sofia or Natalie but at least I have the decency to delete and moderate trash that people left about their looks and garbage like the comments on LOCO above.

I am one person who works 24/7 to report and earn a living. Can Patrick Cleary not afford to pay an online moderator?

I do know the identity of some of LOCO posters. You'd be surprised who frequents Thunderdome.

  7. To the local business owners and others who are too afraid of the left to speak up or admit in public the compliments that give me are happy to benefit from my reporting but my time is not free; am not running a charity. I started this blog because I care about this community. I also do news and expose corruption that other local news outlets ignore. My advertisers and supporters have been harassed, mostly by the left. It has not stopped people from following me or listening.

All this makes it very difficult in a small town to be independent and financially survive, yet I have managed. I have done critical articles about people I support or have supported in the past. Has LOCO or NCJ ever called out Mike Wilson,Natalie Arroyo, Austin Allison, Kim Bergel for anything?

If Humboldt's so called "leaders" and those with money want their reputation associated with racist, sexist garbage, it speaks of their character, not this community.

Reporting is calling, looking for stories constantly, not sitting in an office, printing press releases. Shoe leather reporting is hard work and vision.

Media is following the story and getting public information and having that information bring change, even when it is inconvenient.
