HCSO Press release (9:41 a.m.)

On Feb. 29, 2020, at about 7:10 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 38000 block of Highway 96 in Orleans for the report of a stabbing that had just occurred.

The victim, a 30-year-old female, was transported to a local hospital prior to deputies’ arrival.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the victim had been attending a public gathering and was outside of the event, in the parking lot, when she was approached by the suspect, 40-year-old Carlyle White Otter Blake. Blake and the victim knew each other prior to the incident.

At some point during Blake and the victim’s exchange, Blake reportedly stabbed the victim multiple times in her upper body area. Blake then fled the scene in a vehicle.

Witnesses of the incident transported the victim to an ambulance, where she was then transported to the hospital for treatment. The victim is expected to recover from her injuries.

Deputies searched for Blake throughout the night.

On March 1, at about noon, Sheriff’s deputies in the area of Lower Mill Creek Road and Highway 96, observed Blake driving a vehicle on Highway 96. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Blake failed to yield and fled from deputies at a high rate of speed. While fleeing from deputies, Blake lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled approximately 100 feet down an embankment.

Blake was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the traffic collision. He was later booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)) and evading a peace officer (VC 2800.1(a)). He is being held without bail.
