EPD proactive patrol results in arrest of  Ethan James Maguire

Eureka Police Department officers have re-prioritized their time and proactive activities during this evolving COVID-19 situation. I've directed officers to focus on substantially increasing business and neighborhood security checks, especially overnight.

On one recent night alone, they documented over 100 of these business security checks. (It is important to remember that just because a card wan't left doesn't mean a check wasn't conducted--we often don't leave them.) We appreciate the positive feedback we've been receiving concerning these efforts.

Officers are also patrolling the streets at night looking for crooks.

On 03/22/2020, at approximately 5:50 AM, Officer Ryan Cassidy was in conducting proactive enforcement near the 3300 block of O Street Eureka.  Officer Cassidy saw a male subject who was wearing dark clothing, a backpack, and carrying several other bags while standing in an open door of a parked sedan.  The male appeared to be looking through the interior of the vehicle with a flashlight.

Officer Cassidy turned his patrol vehicle around to contact the suspicious male, later identified as Ethan James Maguire (age 36).  Upon doing so, he saw that Maguire had now set the backpack and bags on the ground next to the vehicle and was sitting inside the car.  Maguire was in the process of stealing any items of value he found inside the vehicle when Officer Cassidy detained him in handcuffs. (Note, car prowling/thievery is NOT one of the “essential activities or businesses” exempted from the County’s Shelter in Place Order!)

Officer Cassidy placed Maguire under arrest for CVC 10852 - Vehicle Tampering, PC 664/488 - Attempted Petty Theft, and H&S 120295 – Shelter In Place (20-001881)

Stay safe and well! Eureka Police Department has your back. -EPD Chief Steve Watson
