According to the jail log Derek Ryan Barnett was arrested yesterday by Arcata Police Department on a new charge and two Ramey warrant charges.
I am not aware of an APD officer Hill. I do know DA Investigator Ryan Hill who works on molestation cases and usually arrests on a Ramey warrant.
Regardless of who arrested him, Barnett was booked yesterday for PC 288.3(a) contacting a minor to commit a felony sex crime, PC 288.2(a)(2) sending harmful material to seduce a minor and PC 288.4 (b) arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd purposes.
The jail log is incorrect about APD being the arresting agency. The Ramey warrant was entered into e court on 12/26/24 and the arrest was by DA Investigator Hill.
Barnett was arraigned on 12/26/24. The DA has charged him with three felonies listed above. Conflict Counsel's office was appointed by Judge Steven Steward; bail is $35,000; a referral was made to probation for supervised release report. OR bail scheduled for 12/30/24; preliminary hearing for 1/8/25.
The only other case Barnett has in Humboldt Superior Court is a 2010 case CR1005072 misdeneanor traffic case which was dismissed.
After my post, I received an email from a reader who I have spoken to in person and who wasthe decoy in the Darell Tatro case which I covered. To protect the anonymity, I am only posting part of the email. While this person has posted some of the texts on social media, it is with a booking photo of supect Barnett and due to the Ninth Circuit ruling, I cannot post the photo. As for the texts, I have to check if and what charges are filed and even if there is a case, I have to devide whether I want to post information before a preliminary hearing which isn't vetted and may not be introduced into evidence and in court.
"hey the Derek Barnett article you posted was 1 of my decoy cases, you were also correct about Ryan Hill being the agent on the case."
12/30/24: At the OR bail hearing, Deputy District Attorney Candace Myers appeared on the case for the People; Deputy Conflict Counsel David Nims for Barnett. He remains out of custody on bond but was ordered by Judge Steven Steward to stay away from schools and parks where children are present.
1/8/25: Preliminary hearing continued by defense to 3/27/25.
