I first covered grand theft suspect Ryan Helmer when he was arrested in December 2023. He had 4 cases prior to the December 2023 arrest with multiple failures to appear and at least three prior convictions and an unsuccessful DEJ. More details in previous coverage. I havebeen following his 2023 case which was his fifth and he has now picked up a sixth case in 2024.
On 10/24, Helmer's 2023 case was on for preliminary hearing but defense requested a continuance due to Helmer's arraignment the same day in the 2024 case.
Despite a request from the People to remand Helmer into custody, Retired Judge John Feeney denied that request and dates in both cases were scheduled with OR bail on 10/28 and Preliminary hearing on 11/5.
10/28: Once again, it was Judge Feeney who granted Helmer supervised release. 11/5 date was vacated; preliminary hearing rescheduled for 12/11.
12/11: Helmer had two cases on for preliminary hearing today and they were both continued to 2/21/25. Instead of forfeiting bond and knowing new charges will be filed, once again Judge Feeney denied remand requested by Deputy DA Roger Rees. Helmer remains out of custody. Oral motion to continue by Deputy Public Defender Wade Orbelian was granted for the 2023 & current 2024 case based on new discovery. Defense is expecting another new 2024 case to be filed and arraignment on that case is supposed to be scheduled for 12/24/24.
There is not much interest in Helmer. He is just one of many defendants with constant continuances and racking up new charges and having multiple cases. I don't have the time nor is it financially worth following this case anymore.
