Why should it be the public or the employees responsibility to enforce mask wearing when the Sheriff refused to enforce it for months?

I didn't watch the Board of Supervisors meeting because I was busy. Same reason I am not watching the video.

It seems Supervisors Virginia Bass and Mike Wilson spoke up about experiences they are seeing and experiencing with non mask  wearers. I have had similar experiences.

There are several people not maintaining social distancing and refusing to wear masks. They are young, old, men and women but the obnoxious ones who act out when asked to put on a mask or step back are usually pimply faced, 20 year olds or wanna be macho white men in their 30s and 40s and drugged out tweakers and drunks.

I asked a young guy at a local bank to step back. There are spots marked where to stand. And he thought it was funny to move closer as the line inched along and try engage me in conversation. He did this three times. I refused to take bait and ignored him. The third time,  I told him what I thought of his immature behavior. He stopped, hung his head and shut up. The security guard at the bank should have said something. The employees should have. It was busy.

I don''t have time to teach manners to some ignorant 20 year old at the bank, living off his family or girlfriend, in baggy sweats who doesn't have a job and is in a hurry to get to the teller. To do what? Go get his energy drink and have another kid he cannot support?

Some employees do ask people to wear masks. Some don't. We all have pandemic fatigue after 10 months. From the beginning, this we educate, not enforce bs came repeatedly from Sheriff William Honsal. There weren't even warnings; let alone citing anyone. No consequences and a cavalier attitude results in people not giving a damn. How many COVID line tips were ignored?

The people causing the spikes aren't paying the bills for the rest of us and they don't get to put our health at risk. Supervisor Rex Bohn, for all your postings on Facebook about masks, why is your friend Billy making excuses and expecting the public to do his job?

Thanks to COVID 19 and not booking people into the jail, unless they have to, even criminals know there are no consequences. People not wearing masks know this mandate is not enforceable and nothing will happen to them if they don't wear a mask. They are selfish and irresponsible and don't care about anyone else.

What happened with those few who were cited for not wearing masks? Were they fined? Were they warned? Let's see some stats and where in Humboldt deputies issued these citations.

I hate to burst Sheriff Honsal's bubble that everyone is online or on social media. Communicating information and relying on that method does not work.

Sheriff Honsal is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of this county; not the rest of us. It his job to enforce the order. If citizens get to enforce who wears a mask, does Sheriff Honsal want citizens to take the law into their hands to enforce other stuff? He is getting paid and so are all government employees. COVID 19 has not only drastically impacted the income of those of us who work in the private industry; it has cut into our savings that we scraped for a rainy day.

These restrictions, threats of curfew, no or limited access to government buildings for months is having a devastating effect on people's lives. To have the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of this county expect the public to do his job and that of Code Enforcement is arrogance. Pay me your salary and I will sit around making videos that have no impact and disappear from the public eye when it counts most. A leader should be out in the community reassuring the public that we are safe; in action; not words.
