HCSO working with Yurok Tribal Police and investigating possible murder-suicide


HCSO just issued this statement about a possible murder-suicide. 

"On Feb. 3, 2026, at 8:47 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff deputies responded to a residence located in the 900 block of Lewis Rd., in Weitchpec to a reported possible murder- suicide.

Upon arrival, deputies located two individuals deceased inside the residence. Based on the preliminary investigation, the incident appears to be consistent with a murder-suicide. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Division is actively investigating the incident and is working closely with the Yurok Tribal Police.

 No additional information will be released at this time. Updates will be released as the investigation continues and as appropriate."

This afternoon, the Yurok Tribe posted a statement on Facebook identifying one of the deceased.

"The Yurok Tribe is mourning the loss of beloved Yurok citizen and community member Celinda Gonzalez. 

A devoted mother, primary caregiver for her elderly parents and tribal employee, Celinda advocated for mental health resources and suicide prevention in the Weitchpec area. As a dedicated administrative assistant for the Tribe, Celinda worked tirelessly to connect Yurok people with Tribal services. Celinda would always go the extra mile to help fellow community members of all ages. 

Celinda was deeply involved in Tribal governance and improving the lives of Tribal citizens. She was a beloved friend to many Tribal Councilmembers, staff and community members. This is a tremendous tragedy for the Tribe.

The Tribal Council is deeply saddened by this loss. The Tribe will be offering resources for Celinda’s family in the coming days. 

United Indian Health Services grief counselors will be available in the Weitchpec Clinic at 23001 State Route 96, 530-625-4300. The Tribe is providing additional grief counseling upon request, please contact Shoshoni Hostler at 707-499-2574. Additionally, the Tribe is offering a day of administrative need for those grieving.

2/11/26 HCSO update:

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has identified the individuals in the murder- suicide that occurred on Feb. 3, in Weitchpec as 52 -year-old Arthur Gutierrez Gonzales, Jr., and 59-year-old Celinda Jane Gonzales, and their next of kin have been notified.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office extends it heartfelt sympathies to the involved families, loved ones, and community all who have been impacted by this tragic event.
