Reuters was the first to report this morning that a hacking group backed by a foreign government stole information from the U.S. Treasury Department and the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
A National Security Council meeting was held at the White House on Saturday, according to Reuters.
The US Commerce Department confirmed it had data breach in a statement to CNN and said the department has asked CISA and the FBI to investigate.
The Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency also confirmed the breach to CNN.
The Washington Post reported it was Russian government hackers and it was the same Russia-linked group breached the elite cybersecurity firm FireEye last week.
