Andrew Crowningshield sentenced 50 years to life for murder of his former girlfriend

As expected, a state prison commitment of 50 years to life was imposed yesterday morning on murder defendant Andrew Curtis Crowningshield, age 28, of Little River.



Crowningshield stands convicted of the cold-blooded February 2018 coastal murder of 22-year old Autumn Renee Johnson, the defendant's former girlfriend and the mother of his child. 

With no additional comments from the defense team, Judge Ann Moorman heard from Autumn's mother.  Mrs. Johnson delivered an extremely impactful statement that brought many present in the courtroom to tears. Then the prosecutor, DA Eyster, contested the defendant's newly-revealed claim of remorse, citing for the record the defendant's recorded statement in February to law enforcement in which the defendant, noting that this would sound bad, nevertheless admitted he had no regrets for having twice shot and then executed the victim at the side of the road.

Further noting that he would no longer be alive many years down the road if and when the defendant becomes eligible for parole, DA Eyster addressed any future parole board on the record, asking that the members considering this defendant and this crime not allow this defendant to ever live free again outside the walls of the Department of Corrections.

To conclude the hearing, the defendant was remanded to the Sheriff for delivery to prison authorities at San Quentin for intake and classification.

The law enforcement agency primarily responsible for the investigation leading up to yesterday's sentencing conclusion was the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.  Despite extensive searching, the firearm used in this crime has never been recovered.
