Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund resignation is effective January 16. In addition to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, other critics of Sund included Gus Papathanasiou, chair of the U.S. Capitol Police Labor Committee.
Papathanasiou said the riots yesterday "should never have happened."
Papathanasiou said lack of planning led to officers exposed to violent protesters storming the Capitol. He says officers lacked the backup and equipment needed to control rioters and Sund needed to be replaced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Papathanasiou said, "Once the breach of the Capitol building was inevitable, we prioritized lives over property, leading people to safety."
Sources told AP that U. S. Capitol Police turned down the Pentagon when they asked if National Guard manpower was needed on January 6. The Capitol Police also turned down the help of the FBI as the violent mob was breaching the Capitol.
