DA received additional information regarding the Lawson case from APD on November 30

I sent the following questions to District Attorney Maggie Fleming regarding the David Josiah Lawson case.

1.Any eta when you can release information on whether charges will be filed?

2. Have any warrants been issued or is the DA's office still investigating?

3. If charges are filed, will Deputy District Attorneys Roger Rees and Jessica Watson prosecute the new case?

This is DA Fleming's response:

"As previously stated we received reports from APD on Thursday November 8.  An initial review revealed that we would need additional existing documents and materials from the Arcata Police Department – we received further information from APD on Friday November 30."

"We are also seeking additional information from other agencies who participated in the investigation.  (I am not sharing details on the additional information requested to protect the investigation.)   We continue to gather and evaluate information."

"I anticipate 4 to 6 additional weeks to complete the process assuming we receive additional needed information in a timely manner."

"It remains premature to consider issuing arrest warrants or assigning the case to anyone during its review."

  1. I sincerely hope they bring charges against the person(s) who murdered this young Black man. His only purpose in life was to obtain his Criminal Justice Degree. His life was tragically cut short while attending an off campus birthday party. I was in church on Easter Sunday, when news of his death was shared with others. I know that this case has been dragging on forever. David Josiah Lawson did not stab himself to death. Someone intentionally brought a knife to that party, it was premediated, and it was intended for David Josiah Lawson. I have lived in this County for 4 years and I have seen and experienced the racism towards Black people. I was a victim of a hate crime in my community but the Eureka Police swept it under the rug. I know what it is like to be Black and living amongst racist people. They smile in your face and stabbing you in the back. Since David Josiah Lawson has been taken away from this earth, we all grieve and feel the pain that Charmaine and her family is enduring. I hope the killer(s) is brought to justice so that the Lawson Family can have closure. As long as the DA's office drag their heels with this case, as far as I am concerned, this County, still have a vicious murderer at large and is being protected by his or family. David Josiah Lawson did not die in vain. Whoever viciously stabbed David Josiah Lawson, their conscious will eat them alive. They will never have peace because they will be haunted of David Josiah Lawson's death. My prayers goes out to the Lawson Family.
