Fortuna burglary suspect returns to alleged crime scene and gets arrested



 - On February 12th at approximately 1030 AM, a male subject entered Shotz Coffee in the 1600 block of Main Street and removed the employee tip jar from the counter before fleeing out of the front door of the business. Officers with the Fortuna Police Department responded but were unable to locate the suspect.
On February 14, 2016 at approximately 1029 hours, the same male subject again entered Shotz Coffee, removed the employee tip jar and fled out the front door onto Main Street. A citizen followed the suspect and phoned the Fortuna Police Department. Officers responded to the area of 14th Street near L Street and followed the path believed to be utilized by the suspect as he attempted to flee, recovering items of clothing he was reportedly wearing during the theft.
At approximately1045 hours, an officer located the suspect attempting to flee in the area of N Street and 15th Street. The suspect ran towards the creek area near Rohner Park before becoming entangled in a large series of thorn bushes. The officer held the suspect, identified as Garret Gibbs (age 26) of Fortuna, at tazer point until additional officers could arrive to assist with the arrest. Property from the theft was located in close proximity to Gibbs location.
Gibbs was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Jail. He was charged with burglary and booked on an outstanding arrest warrant.
