Supervisor Mark Lovelace speaking on behalf of colleagues or just personally when he attended the Coastal Commission meeting to support Charles Lester?

This is the link to the video of the Coastal Commission meeting during which after closed session, executive director Charles Lester was fired.

A quote from sfgate.com:

Lester “has always been a strong ally and friend to local government,” said Mark Lovelace, a supervisor in Humboldt County. He said he and his colleagues “cannot fathom what is going through the minds of the commissioners who seek his dismissal. He is our friend.”

I have contacted Supervisor Lovelace and asked him if the quote is accurate; if  he made these comments during public comment at the meeting or in an interview and clarification about who these colleagues are.

Supervisor Lovelace responded, "Notice the writer did not include the words "his colleagues" in quotes. It's inaccurate. I said " other elected officials I've talked to", which is the case. I wasn't speaking on behalf of the board, and didn't claim to. I was only speaking in my own capacity and from my own personal experience."

It is my understanding he drove down in his own car for this meeting.

There was no Humboldt County Board of Supervisor's decision made on any kind of feedback regarding the Coastal Commission and their decision about Mr. Lester.

This morning I'm down in Morro Bay to speak to the Coastal Commission in support of their Executive Director, Dr. Charles Lester. A handful of Commissioners are leading an effort to dismiss him, citing "lack of performance". Underlying that hollow claim, however, is the same old accusation that he's too political and has his own agenda. More accurately, that concern can be translated to read that he won't carry the political agenda of those Commissioners making the claim. Enforcing the Coastal Act is not an agenda. It is the responsibility of the Coastal Commission.

I contacted all the other Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Virginia Bass and Supervisor Estelle Fennell both said they would be contacting me after meetings.

Supervisor Rex Bohn said that while he thinks the Coast and the position of Coastal Comission executive director is an important issue, this was an action taken by another state agency and that there have been no discussions between him and Supervisor Lovelace.

Supervisor Ryan Sundberg also said that he had not had any discussions with Supervisor Lovelace.

  1. I'm happy that Mark spoke at this important hearing. Was glad to see several locals representing Humboldt.
