Alleged sex trafficker Darin Ward was held to answer by Humboldt Superior Court Assistant Presiding Judge on all 14 counts and special allegations last November after a lengthy preliminary hearing.
Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prosecutor for this case. Mr. Ken Bareilles is still Ward's attorney of record.
There was a defense motion to continue on 1/10/25 which was granted. Readiness Conference was rescheduled for 4/9/25; jury trial 4/21/25.
I added that update to the last post because it was just a standard motion and dates get rescheduled all the time. I just found out yesterday that Mr. Bareilles signed a substitution of attorney for Ward which has not been filed yet. Ward is looking to retain a Redding lawyer and "is trying to raise funds." He is in custody so I assume someone; his parents and family are helping him. They should have gone with another lawyer before the preliminary hearing and I only wrote that a few times as well as during the preliminary hearing. I am not sure why Redding. I don't know if Trump supporter Ward and his family reached out to someone in Shasta County or were contacted by someone who shares their political views. I say this because I covered a court case where the lawyer was conservative and that played a role in his representing that party. I covered that case and the lawyer told me this himself.
Being conservative has nothing to do with being an experienced defense attorney or defending someone in this type of case. Ward and his family were in denial while the preliminary hearing was going on; whether that is still the case remains to be seen. Being conservative is not going to change the facts or the evidence in this case.
