On May 27 and 28, 2025, the Northern District will conduct a two-day in-person workshop, in partnership with community restorative-justice practitioners and survivors of serious crime. Workshop participants include defendants, surrogate victim-survivors, experienced facilitators, community members, probation and pretrial services officers, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.
The workshop’s objectives are to (a) educate about the principles and practices of restorative justice, (b) evoke a deeper understanding of all crime as harm, and (c) explore meaningful acceptance of responsibility and the impact of one’s harms on others through relationship-building among responsible parties, harmed parties, and community members.
This post-workshop panel consists of participants in the workshop and will provide an opportunity for dialogue about the workshop.
Panelists:
Jeffrey Bornstein, Assistant United States Attorney (moderator)
Thalia González, Professor of Law, U.C. Law San Francisco
Marylyn Tesconi, survivor and facilitator in the Restorative Justice Community
Candis Mitchell, Chief Deputy Public Defender
Laurel Beeler, United States Magistrate Judge
