I am not posting the location of this December 5 event for the safety and privacy of those attending.
There is a flyer circulating and if you are a non binary or trans Humboldt resident interested in this December 5 workshop contact Queer Humboldt.
After I did this post on my blog, two days later, Queer Humboldt posted the flyer and information on Facebook so I have added the information which includes the location. The workshop presentation will be by Legal Services of Northern California.
I was informed that there is concern, especially among the younger non binary and trans members in the community about getting their legal name changes and other documents changed in time before the Trump administration takes over.
Those familiar with Humboldt Superior Court know that hearings are calendared in the normal course but there is also a backlog. Not all local publications offer the service to publish name changes and it isn't cheap. The process itself is not hard in Humboldt if you know the proper procedure and have the proper form.
Fourth District Supervisor Natalie Arroyo reached out to Humboldt Presiding Judge Kelly Neel and Judge Steven Steward to see what could be done to allay these concerns and for the correct information. I understand one of the judges will be at this workshop. Supervisor Arroyo is attending.
11/28: Queer Humboldt posted on Facebook, "We recognize that in a time where Trans People are being disproportionately targeted that things like name and gender marker changes can be a very daunting and/or confusing process. That's why we are happy to be partnering with Legal Services to offer a 90 minute presentation on name/gender marker changes followed by 60 minutes of one-on-one support from community volunteers. We hope to demystify this process for our local community through this training and volunteer work."
