Reader had the same questions and observations I had about TAY funding for Humboldt vs Mendocino

Hi John,

I just read your posting of Gav's press release about Transitional Age Youth and housing funding and well.....I have questions. One being, where is Humboldt?

It's listed here:

https://www.hcd.ca.gov/grants-and-funding/programs-active/transitional-age-youth-program

Humboldt dig get funding, but only ~$330k in the several rounds of funds given out. But how did Mendocino receive $1.2m versus $330k? The application process appears to be the same for everyone that applied on brief reading. Did our supes not try hard enough? Other cities such as Los Angeles, I would imagine have enough expendable income lying around that they shouldn't need to ask the government for money, but they got a piece of the pie. As did Salinas. Other cities were rewarded $0 for whatever reason, though I suppose they didn't apply or something held up the money.

There is definitely a need for more than a paltry $330k for our local young adults that are stuck out in the homeless world. That'll pay for what, rent for a year on one home plus salaries for two people to do....something related to homeless youngsters? I can tell you from my year at the Eureka Mission there are MANY of these kids that need to be off the streets but can't break the chains around their necks for various reasons. One did graduate shortly after me, so that is a plus, but there's a couple dozen others that I got to speak with that need any help they can get. There is help, but it is sorely lacking in availability either by numbers of persons qualifying for help, or FUNDING that simply isn't there to help at all. So they would show up at the mission because that's the only place they felt somewhat safe and a bit of sanity. $330k is laughable. Our county can do better. That "K" in the amount really needs to be an "M" if Government wants to see real help.

More questions than answers, but that's all I got.

Cordially,

I asked my reader if they want anonymity or to use their name. If they chose the latter, I will update. I posted the reader's observations and questions on the blog and if the County or DHHS or Board of Supervisors wish to respond, they can send me a statement or to all media. The public deserves the question answered why Humboldt got less money and the more places that information is disseminated, the better it serves the community.
