"Given the charges in this case, there is argument whether bail should be set at all"

An explosive arraignment and a show down between Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer and Mr. Michael Robinson followed by family members/supporters of the alleged victims confronting Cunningham and the older man with him outside the courtroom.

Only Nazy Javid from North Coast News and I were  in court.  We followed Cunningham outside the courthouse. The older man with Cunningham was identified as Cunningham's father by one person there supporting the family. Another person said that was his step father.

Cunningham and the older man got into a car with Oregon license plate.

Initially, Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer was requesting a bail increase; the amount  she requested today was four million and 35,000, which is according to bail schedule. "He is eligible for 4 lifetime sentences," said Ms. Schaffer.

Mr. Robinson objected. "He is hiding. He is terrified," he said about Cunningham. The people have skinny evidence based on Ramey warrants and arrested his client. "He is not dangerous. He is not a flight risk. They want to incarcerate him to punish him. "
Mr. Robinson said, " if Ms. Schaffer is right," his client would be held accountable.

Deputy DA Carolyn Schaffer disagreed with Mr. Robinson's remarks. She said while Cunningham was in court today. "I don't trust him to be here tomorrow."

Judge Stephen Mock said, "Given the charges in this case, there is argument whether bail should be set at all." While he said he agreed with Ms. Schaffer in principle; he said he was not going to remand Cunningham today and follow procedure.

An OR/Bail review hearing was scheduled for Friday, June 1 at 9 a.m. Ms. Schaffer gave notice in court today that she is going to request no bail for Cunningham.

Mr. Robinson said that  there "are four victims roughly over 12 years. Contact is significant. There is a physical component and visual representation." Discovery is "voluminous."

People said that there are additional  victims than those listed in the complaint and they haven't been contacted yet.

Protective orders were issued and Cunningham was served in court.

When pleas of not guilty and denial to special allegations were entered, Cunningham had also entered a 10 and 60 day time waiver for his preliminary hearing.  After the bail review hearing was scheduled, that time waiver was withdrawn. Dates are expected to be set on Friday.

Angry words were exchanged outside court. One man said his full name and that he was the grandfather of Cunningham's alleged victims. I am not printing his name nor the name of the man who yelled at Cunningham and the man identified as Cunningham's stepfather. The people in court supporting the victim asked the older man why he was supporting Cunningham. Homophobic slurs against Cunningham and the other older man were yelled, including insinuations about sexual acts between the two men.

Two bailiffs were outside court keeping the peace. Victim Witness took the six people that attended court on behalf of the alleged victims into a separate room. The older man told the bailiff that he would get physical with one of the victim's family members.

Great video and recap of today's court proceedings by Nazy Javid of North Coast News. That's me following Andrew Cunningham and the older man out of the Courthouse, who accompanied him to court. That man had to be cautioned by bailiffs not to interact with upset family members. You can see his reaction towards Nazy in this video.

  1. If there are four separate victims then he's looking at multiple life sentences. If that was me I'd be googling "countries without extradition treaties."
