DA has charged attempted terrorist and criminal threat suspect Daryl Ray Jones with 19 felonies. The complaint was filed today by Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees who is the prosecutor assigned to the case. Arcata Police Department, Fortuna Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, Ferndale Police Department, Eureka Police Department are all the local agencies listed on top of the complaint. As reported previously, APD authored the Ramey warrant.
Arraignment is at 1:29 this afternoon, as of 9:53, courtroom is not listed. 1:14 p.m. It says Courtroom 5 in e court and the calendar outside the courtroom was just updated. 1:28 p.m.: I see Ms. Joann Carter speaking with Mr. Rees. Could be for any case, could be for an alleged victim in this case or she could be here as Jones' attorney. I just heard heard her ask about the case with Deputy District Attorney Ian Harris. Just found out he won't be brought down until 2 p.m. or after 2 p.m.
2:36 p.m.: For all the interest in this case, only two people were in court. I don't know if they are alleged victims but they recognized me. Victim Witness was in court. "No bail continues at this time," said Judge Killoran. Conflict Counsel was appointed. OR bail 4/17; preliminary hearing on 4/24.
Ms. Carter is representing the alleged victim in Count 1 and 2. Mr. Harris appeared on the case for the People since Mr. Rees was in another courtroom. I was going to add the complaint but glad I waited. Judge Lawrence Kilkoran asked Mr. Harris before he read the charges if the victims were confidential because Count 1 was stalking. After speaking with Ms. Carter, Mr. Harris made the motion to have the alleged victims in Count 1 and 2 be John Doe.
As for the other counts, Mr. Harris said just having Jane Doe or John Doe would be confusing. "There are so many victims. There were so many reports. "It will be confusing at the preliminary hearing." I don't know if the DA is going to file an amended complaint so I am going to wait a day or two. If that amendment does not happen, I may still wait to add the complaint until the preliminary hearing and see what the court testimony is and Jones' custody status. The alleged victims were traumatized and they and their families have suffered enough over months and I do understand the anxiety and fear they experience. Harassment, threats made to me and I have to see some of these people at the courthouse or out in town.
I also have the Ramey warrant authored by APD. It is very well written with what was required yet showing sensitivity and not including any identifying information about minors or student by APD Detective Celeste Villarreal.
Again, it has identifying information and the preliminary hearing has not occurred. I will include some details. In the Ramey warrant, it mentions that Jones contacted a woman he briefly dated while he was in middle school in Arcata for two weeks, harassed her on social media and threatened her co-workers. The Ramey warrant goes on to list who he contacted at Cal Poly, other agencies, Sunnybrae, Fortuna, Eureka schools.
Only Count 1 is stalking, the rest of the counts are criminal threats. I understand Judge Killoran's concern in Count 1 because in certain cases like sexual assault, sexual abuse, domestic violence, the DA does list the alleged victim as a Doe victim even if they are not a minor. John Doe is an adult. The rest are criminal threats from Count 2 to Count 18 and Count 19 is attempted terrostic threats. So far, as I am still going through the Ramey warrant and complaint and checking names, the Ramey warrant does not list any victims who are minors; the complaint lists names just as any other case.
I recognize some of the names and they are adults and in public positions. Naming the alleged victims helps the community support them because it makes this case more personal for people. It was not stated in court today that any alleged victim, including John Doe in Count 1 or 2 is a minor.
Jones walked into court in a red jumpsuit which means he is in admin segregation and even wity being cuffed, swaggered in like he was at a press conference. An extra court bailiff led him into.court and stood by his side. Jones arrogantly stroked his beard while the 19 felony counts were read. Judge Killoran asked him, "Can you afford an attorney or should I appoint one?" Jones snapped, "Appoint me one."
After what he did to this community, I do not care if he has mental health issues or will fake that defense. Being mentally ill or claiming that has became an excuse to get away with any criminal activity. Those who are mentally ill, should agree to medication; show genuine remorse, be evaluated for years before they are unleashed back into the community.
