The jury trial for Jason Arreaga charged with the deaths of Harley Wayne Hammers and Angel Robin Tully committed in Fieldbrook started today with a jury pool filling out questionnaires and motions in limine and an evidentiary hearing of a prospective witness.
Arreaga dressed in black pants and a mauve dress shirt sat next to his defense attorney Ms. Heidi Holmquist. Deputy District Attorney Zach Curtis is prosecuting the case. He briefly looked at family members/supporters in the audience, one of them is the potential defense witness, Carly Michaels.
Judge Marilyn Miles will be the trial judge. This morning before she heard testimony from Ms. Michaels, who is represented by local attorney Ms. Marion Miller, Judge Miles went over the schedule for the trial. Ms. Michael's testimony was heard in a closed courtroom.
The trial is estimated to last 10 weeks, the end date is estimated to be November 13. The court will not be in session on September 18 and October 19 as well closed due to legal holidays on October 12 and November 11. Each side will get 20 peremptory challenges, there will be 4 alternates selected, in addition to the 12 jurors. There is a gag order in effect.
In the motions in limine filed by the defense, one of the motions was to have a closed courtroom when jurors are be questioned regarding confidential information and for certain evidentiary hearings. Judge Miles granted that motion.
Family members of the victim were also present in the courtroom.
No other media was present in Courtroom 2 this morning.
