I spoke with Luke literally minutes after the news broke about Governor Brown signing the bills.
Statement From CCVH:
Three days after Assemblymember Jim Wood stood on the steps of the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse, we are glad to share the news that Governor Jerry Brown has signed a package of bills to create long overdue regulation of the medical cannabis industry in California. After nearly two decades of near dormancy, a rush of activity and a tidal wave of work will transform the landscape for medical cannabis farmers, providers, patients, and dispensaries. Our own freshman Assemblymember Jim Wood wasted no time in getting to work on this ignored subject matter. In his first term in the California State Assembly, Dr. Wood quickly got to work, and the fruits of this work have been validated today with the Governor’s signature.
Yet again proving that the North Coast has some of the most courageous and hard working representatives in the Capitol, fellow freshman legislator and State Senator Mike McGuire’s SB 643 was another of the medical cannabis bills signed into law earlier today by the Governor. Humboldt County is proud to be represented by leaders who waste no time in tackling tough issues others have neglected to deal with.
AB 243, authored by Dr. Wood, and SB 643 by Mr. McGuire are now the law of the land. Due to their efforts, Humboldt County will have the environmental protection and appellation zoning we need to help ensure a sustainable future, and we look forward to this new era in California.
We thank Assemblymember Wood and State Senator McGuire for all their effort. We would also like to thank our local Supervisors, and members of the medical marijuana ad hoc committee, Estelle Fennell and Ryan Sundberg who have been heavily engaged on the state level throughout this process. Without their leadership, our community would never have come so far. Last and most importantly, we want to thank the thousands upon thousands of citizen stakeholders who have helped along this long and winding path. When the grassroots are engaged in the democratic process, the “grasstops” listen!
Supervisor Ryan Sundberg said, "With the signing of these three bills, we are taking a step toward regulating and and taxing this large industry. We can now better deal with the impacts and improve our quality of life here in Humboldt. I appreciate all of the work Senator McGuire and Assemblyman Wood put into these bills to ensure we have as much local control as possible"
