I contacted Fourth District Supervisor Virginia Bass and DHHS Director Connie Beck about the current status of Laura's Law in Humboldt, on May 6. This morning at 7 a.m., I will be talking with KMUD's Holly Carter about this topic.
This was put on the Board of Supervisors agenda by Supervisor Bass in April 2016.
"It is with staff at the moment," said Supervisor Bass.
"We presented statewide status to BOS and will be having subcommittee with Behavioral Health Board look at what it might look like in Humboldt," said Ms. Beck. "We do not have numbers that might fit criteria at this time. However we do know they are very small."

Laura's Law presentation at the next BOS meeting should be supported by the community
DISCUSSION: Connie Beck, Director of
Health and Human Services will provide the Board with a presentation related to "Laura's Law" (also known as Assisted Outpatient Treatmenl/AOT), a process that
allows the courts to compel individuals with severe mental illness and a past history of arrest or violence stay in treatment as a condition for living in the community, and equally commits the county mental health system to providing the treatment.
The above agenda item, in my opinion, is the most crucial one next Tuesday at the Board of Supervisor meeting.
I hope the Board of Supervisors adopt this and they are supported by the City of Eureka and Arcata and other cities and unincorporated area of the county.
NAPA has to be compelled by court order to come get people from Humboldt and then they release them as soon as they can. If the person ends up in the criminal system again, they get incarcerated.
Governor Jerry Brown should make funding for mental health services a priority, if he wants to reduce prison population. At a national level, legislators should do the same.
Anyone who opposes it does not care about individuals struggling with mental illness or public safety.

Laura's law in Humboldt? Why not?
Laura's Law is a California state law that allows for court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment. To qualify for the program, the person must have a serious mental illness plus a recent history of psychiatric hospitalizations, jailings or acts, threats or attempts of serious violent behavior towards [self] or others.

Can only be implemented if the County has outpatient programs and it is approved by Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.
San Luis Obispo passed it, why not Humboldt. People declared mentally incompetent either go to NAPA, recently only after threats of a contempt order due to delays, then are sent back if they are barely competent to either plead out or be released.
Not safe for them, not safe for the public.
If you keep getting in trouble, you keep harming others, you should be forced to take your medication.
