Jon Yalcinkaya aka Liberal Jon reiterates his "plan" to run for Linda Atkin's Eureka Council seat and his platform
"... to represent the bridge district. You should know upfront that my focus will be those working and living in this district because I think these are the people and values that need a greater voice in government. Remember, prioritizing does not mean exclusion of other values or interests."
Yup, well not (paraphrasing) "Linda Atkin's seat" but as of now I do plan to run to represent the constituents of the 2nd Ward of Eureka. As far as filling papers, sources tell me that is a legal requirement to running. I don't like the chances of winning the election if I choose not to file.
Sincere apologies to all those running in June 7 primary election. It was not my intention for this information to be noteworthy and I am still of the opinion that it isn't. This is information that I have posted before.
So back to those elections...Are you still registered as a Republican John? Who are you voting for in the primary? Are you #Nevertrump, or will you be an obligated supporter or an enthusiastic supporter of the presumptive Republican nominee?
Jon, your answer makes no sense. Simple yes or no. Are you running? Will you file papers. You are the one who keeps talking about running but it's all talk. You are the one talking vague points. Stop talking about the second ward seat and it won't be news until you run.
I am not running for office but yes I am registered Republican and proud. Yes, I will support Trump. Who are you voting for Jon? Since the Democratic party is intent on shoving down Hillary as the nominee, will you vote for a woman who has repeatedly lied to the American people, endangered the lives of American abroad and looked the other way while her philandering husband took advantage of women?
The media and the Democrats have spun their version of Trump just as you and some in the local Democrat party repeatedly paint others in your fantasy, regardless of reality.
You could not answer any questions on THC, you did not here, you just flip it around to Trump. Why can't you specifically answer what will you do to improve the life of citizens in Eureka. Concrete points Jon, not flowery words.
Thank you for being candid. I'll be voting for Bernie on the 7th and more than likely Hillary on November 8th. I'll cast my vote proudly in both cases.
One Councilmember will not change the direction of a City on his or her own, especially a city where so much is accomplished and even decided by staff. I will be coming out with position papers but I'm sure they will never meet your standards John.
Government is not business and people should not expect a public official to measurably improve their lives. Public officials are one aspect of our very complex society.
Having said that, of course public officials will help set the direction for the future and sometimes, like this current City Council very difficult decisions are being made that adversely affect very few and will ultimately make many much happier as those in dire need do not have unofficial resting places near our places of commerce.
I'm sorry my inaction or indecision is frustrating. I haven't filed papers yet. Becoming a public figure for the first time in one's life is a difficult personal change and challenge. We'll see how it goes.
One thing though, as an aspiring reporter you should use proper terminology. "Democrat Party" is an epithet. It' the "Democratic Party". I have no problem if you chose to use the term "Democrat Party", but when you do remember that this in and of itself is (paraphrasing) "painting others in (a) fantasy".
People should not expect a public official to measurably improve their lives. Your words Jon. You don't have to meet my standards Jon, you have to meet the standards required of an elected official.
Don't lecture to me or anyone else about what it means to be a reporter. You don't define the standard or have a clue. The opinion I care about is peers who are respected and accredited and belong to my profession.
Besides insults, you have nothing to offer. You love to cut and paste. Jon, as a Democrat or Liberal or whatever name label you identify on a given day, you are not an example of tolerance. Keep on commenting because the voters, if anyone actually votes for you, if you run, should see what behavior they should expect from you.
You do not conduct yourself well in society, as an elected official you would be an embarrassment.
I'd like to comment on the use of the term "embarrassment" and I'd like to talk about this in the context our communities public discourse.
We both will lament that left and right can't really talk to one another, but you and I have very different solutions to this local problem. It seems to me that you have been striving for a community that has one consensus where good, upstanding people agree and we should find ways to expand that consensus. (I do not wish to miss-characterize your position, but this seems to be one way of summing up the discussions we have about perceived dangers of local partisan conflicts.)
I am striving for a community where we can speak about the very real differences in our opinions and world views without personal attacks. There are very real, very stark, very substantial differences between, say a Linda Atkins and a Marian Brady, Mark Lovelace and Rex Bohn, you and I, or thousands of other people in Eureka and Humboldt.
Far from being embarrassed, I have been proud of participating in online discussions is I feel I have been part of protecting and expanding an online discussion where people with divergent opinions can at the very least speak with respect for one another. Respect does not mean that we cannot or should not get angry or disappointed in one another, that is inevitable with a community as diverse as ours.
But here is my point. Part of a respectful discussion and a vibrant community discourse will be a shared experience, a shared narrative if you will, which we can discuss. If we can't agree on what is happening or what happened, then we surely won't agree on what we should do going forward.
Which brings me back to my public life which you have summed up as a looming embarrassment. Please reference one (or more if you have them) examples where my public life would constitute an embarrassment to you or anyone else. Without going into specifics, I think and hope that I have demonstrated to you personally at least a couple of actions and typings that were the opposite of embarrassments? I really am trying - not to be a non-embarrassment - but to be fair and respectful to all, especially those I disagree with.
I think we can agree that we have a generally opaque and broken political system here in Humboldt County and online and through my time as a associate member of the HCDCC one of my goals has been to shine a little lite on this process while being very, very clear of my own perspective. Where you've found any of this to be an embarrassment I would like to know specifics, not simply to request accountability to your claim and to move toward a shared narrative, but also the probability that I will learn from a good person who has a very different perspective on public policy than I do.
As you remember from being a reader of THC like I am, we all have our blind spots. Lord knows I do. Lookit, I don't expect your answer to come in a day, week, month or every. But keep it in mind. Let me know specifically (ie a link) of the embarrasing or intolarent behavior you are talking about. I am careful about what I write even if I often don't have the time to edit like I should. (By the way, we can both agree that my grammar IS an embarrassment, I'm embarrassed right now)
I enjoy knowing you and consider you a friend. I disagree with you with what feels like everything, but I enjoy the conversation. I hope that if, by some miracle, I am elected that after 4 or 8 years as a City Councilmember what you see as embarrassments will be limited to policy decisions on which we disagree. If so, hopefully we could agree that embarrassment would have been too strong of a word.

John, you're better than this, why make everything a fight? Take the high road my friend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kendall.

ReplyDeleteReese, looking in the mirror again? At least, I use my real name. What's your dog in this fight?
