Michael Black was scheduled to be sentenced on 2/6/25. He has several open cases from 2024. Dates have been continued and rescheduled several times. I have covered Black since 2019 and with detailed posts. Sentencing was continued to 2/10.
Deputy District Attorney Ian Harris appeared on the case for the People. Ms. Andrea Sullivan is Black's attorney. "My client is not ready to be sentenced," Ms. Sullivan told Judge Steward.
Judge Steven Steward mentioned that the Widmark jurors were going to be there in a few minutes. Mr. Harris said perhaps the sentencing could be continued to the afternoon.
After calling some other cases, Judge Steward asked to briefly speak with attorneys in chambers. Ms. Sullivan spoke with Black again.
Judge Steward said, "I spoke with counsel off record; briefly. I raised the issue of transport. The Court is not prepared to release Mr. Black without a plan for transportation."
Judge Steward said Black plea deal is "for a five year prison sentence to be suspended and for him to be placed on probation. It is crucial he be directly transported to the Delancey Street program."
After Judge Steward continued the sentencing to February 10 as he should given Black's record and history and referred it to the Probation Department for input; Black who had been behaving up to that point tried to act out as usual. Judge Steward and the bailiffs were in no mood for Black's nonsense. He was escorted out of the courtroom.
Given Black's record, multiple cases and several victims who have shared with me what they have gone through, thank you Judge Steward. His many victims asked me to be careful covering him and this is an issue I deal with daily. I appreciate those readers who are genuine and think of my safety.
