"That was never supposed to happen, you grabbed me by my throat"; Mckinleyville stabbing suspect cries in court as ex leaves with another woman

"Do you wish to have an attorney appointed for you?" Judge Joyce Hinrichs asked Michael Smith.

Smith, crying, said, "I don't have an attorney."

Judge Hinrichs explained to him that if he could not afford an attorney, she would appoint one for him.

While Judge Hinrichs was explaing the CLETS protective order to Smith, he asked his attorney, "Am I allowed...". Mr. Reavis shook his head and comforted Smith who was crying through the arraignment.

As he left the courtroom and was being taken back to the jail, he looked at the back of the courtroom and said, "That was never supposed to happen. You grabbed me by my throat." Two women, one of whom was Jane Doe exited the courtroom in a hurry.

The male victim was a neighbor trying to help Jane Doe. People assumed that the fight over Jane Doe was between an ex and present boyfriend.

Before court today, from observations, the woman accompanying Jane Doe could be a friend or could be her current girlfriend/partner.
