Preliminary hearing scheduled for Miss Hoopa who has been charged with alleged abuse of an underage female victim; defendant's family continues their overzealous courtroom tactics

This afternoon, a disposition and reset hearing was scheduled for the case in which Kayla Brown, Miss Hoopa, is charged with  the following four counts:

Count 1 Abnormal Sexual Interest in Children and arranging a meeting for that purpose PC 288.4 (b); Count 2 Sexual penetration with a foreign object; [289.(i)  any person over the age of 21 years who participates in an act of sexual penetration with another person who is under 16 years of age shall be guilty of a felony]; Count 3 288.3 (a) [288.3.  (a) Every person who contacts or communicates with a minor, or attempts to contact or communicate with a minor, who knows or reasonably should know that the person is a minor, with intent to commit an offense specified in Section 207, 209, 261, 264.1, 273a, 286, 288, 288a, 288.2, 289, 311.1, 311.2, 311.4 or 311.11 involving the minor shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for the term prescribed for an attempt to commit the intended offense] and Count 4 PC 647.6 (a) which is child molestation/annoying a child.

The case is being prosecuted by DDA Brie Bennett. Brown is being represented by private defense attorney Jeffrey Schwartz.

This afternoon, the defendant's family and friends came in first. In a courtroom that was almost empty with several seats, they came and sat right behind me. After my email to Ms. Bennett and Mr. Schwartz after their last courtroom antics, they left me alone today. Brown was not in court, her attorney said he was appearing on her behalf. Only two people were in court for Brown. Her personal appearance has been waived by the filing of a 977 form.

The victim's family and friends came a few minutes later, about 15 people, all wearing blue ribbons with the Victim Witness Representative. April is sexual abuse awareness month and this was to show the victim support.

One of Brown's family/friends, I think it was her mother was scribbling on a note pad while staring at the victim's family and friends. I have no idea what she was writing because I only glanced briefly over my shoulder due to a lot of movement. The case had not been called yet and all I know is she kept looking over at the victim's family and then was writing stuff on her pad.

Intervention is set for May 11 at 3 p.m. and Preliminary hearing for May 12 at 8:30 a.m.
