I was visiting Turkey this past month and someone I spoke to mentioned the outrage at the death of 12 people in France when 12 million have died in the middle east due to violence in the past 30 years.
I'd think we should think about the asymmetry of death by violence. I'm not in any way condoning terrorism, especially in the name of Allah and I appreciate that people's have to be responsible for their own countries/religious beliefs etc.
I just wonder if Christians as the one's being persecuted is accurate if we consider context. Context of wealth and power for example. While Christians rightfully claim victimhood and persecution as you and FOX point out, do you think that that person I met had any right to feel as if s/he was being played as a pawn and ultimate victim in post cold war games based on the strategic importance of the region? Is there any reason to keep track of the devastation in terms of number of lives, or is the clear and utter devastation of those in Muslim countries in the Middle East and elsewhere possible simply an example of good people on the wrong side of history and religion?
Jon, you raise some good points and thank for your comment. The remark about you and Fox news is one that indicates you are not looking at this with an entirely unbiased perspective.
A human life, even one lost is a big deal. I am not going to get into a huge discussion with you on socio economic issues. I won't assume but chances are that you look at the world from a liberal point where discussion is academic.
Jews and Christians have been persecuted for centuries. While all religions have a past, only followers of one particular religion have been involved in world conflicts since their religion was established. Atheists are not suing other religions other than Christianity and this is increasing, schools and public places are being targeted when Christianity is expressed and people being slaughtered in the Middle East right now are Christians.
This statistic in Turkey, was it from anon Christian? A Muslim. We are not talking about deaths over the years since time immemorial, we are talking about deaths now. President Obama can make speeches and gets things done when he wants. He has been pathetic in his response to the rape and deaths of Christians in Mexico and the Middle East.
