"Other than accusations, what did you do to investigate Jane Doe #1?"; Kufner's defense attorney raises many good questions during cross examination

On Thursday, June 17, Mr. Casey Russo, who is representing John Kufner raised some good questions on his cross examination of HCSO Sgt. Williams. Mr. Russo asked Sgt. Williams, "So, Detective Franco was not at the CAST interview?"

This was after he asked who was present at the CAST interview of Jane Doe #1.

Three other HCSO staff went with Detective Cheryl Franco and Sgt. Williams to interview Kufner, the rest of them were in plain clothes except for one officer who was in uniform and already at the residence when Det. Franco and Sgt. Williams arrived.

When asked if  Kufner was given notice, Sgt. Williams said, "I believe I gave him notice." Later on during cross Sgt. Williams said he did not give notice to Kufner.

"Other than accusations, what did you do to investigate Jane Doe #1?" Mr. Russo asked Sgt. Williams.

Sgt. Williams said he did not go to Jane Doe's school or trailer park or check Jane Doe's background "other than what I learned during investigation."

"Did you learn the identity of the first person Jane Doe told the accusations to?" asked Mr. Russo.

Sgt. Williams replied he did not learn the identity of that person.

"The CAST interview, the pretext call, and the interview with Mr. Kufner is the extent of the investigation on this case?" said Mr. Russo.

Mr. Russo said that in the CAST interview Jane Doe did not say inappropriate touching was "daily", she said "20 times."

Sgt. Williams responded, "Correct."

"She did not use rape," said Mr. Russo.

"I do not have specific recollection of that word," said Sgt. Williams.

Mr. Russo got Sgt. Williams to admit that he did not read Kufner his Miranda rights "because he was not in custody."

"Rubbed his dick on her ass, dry-humped her was not said by Jane Doe," said Mr. Russo.

"I believe Jane Doe said he rubbed his penis where she pooped," said Sgt. Williams.

"She never mentioned his erect penis," said Mr. Russo.

"No," responded Sgt. Williams.

"These are things not said by Jane Doe that you said to Mr. Kufner to get him to admit," said Mr. Russo. "These are psychological tactics you are trained to get admission. There was no attempt to talk to Mr. Kufner again."

Sgt. Williams did say that Kufner was only interviewed that one time.
