Terry Lee Thomas assaulted and dies outside Courthouse Market, Dax Brown shot at Hammond Park, one man shot and another injured near Watson and F in Eureka last night, all locations I used to walk without fear just a year ago.
With Douglas Anderson, the victims in Phoenix Campbell-Loya's and Victoria Clark's case and now this stabbing in Arcata.
This doesn't even scratch the surfaces of the homicides from Garberville to McKinleyville, this year.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't start walking in fear unless these murders are essentially random. If the victim knows the murderer, or the murders are some kind of deal gone bad, you are probably safe on the streets. But if they are street robberies, or crazy people striking at whomever is close by, then the streets are not safe at all. I go to the Courthouse Market often at night when I'm staying at the Townhouse, and have never felt unsafe nor had a bad experience. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that you have been safe when you stay at the Townhouse but that is literally next door to the Courthouse Market with traffic on 4th Street. I still live my life as I have but I am more cautious where I walk at night, certainly not the dark alleys of Old Town.
DeleteCan't tell you a pattern just based on court cases but in most of those, it is not random. There have been muggings and assaults by strangers. Drugs in most cases. I don't feel the way I did when I moved here in 2003. There isn't a day that goes by without sirens. It's become too common place.
Which is why the neighborhood watch groups are strengthening, people are not liking what is happening. Yet they vote for stupid Propositions that make it worse, way worse. And, unless and until they demand that those be revoked, it's only going to get worse.
ReplyDeleteIt is not safe. My office was broken into by somebody last Friday, when I was in LA, and I am one street away from the Town House. There are times I leave the office late and I see people wandering around and wonder what they are going to do. I do not feel safe. The murder of Father Freed was entirely random. I used to live at 9th and H and I did everything I could to buy a house on the East side of town because I was leaving for Iraq and I feared for my family's safety. I hear the violent maniacal screaming outside my office about 3 times a week, and I hope things are OK. I have seen violent fights break out at the bus stop in front of city hall. This 3-block neighborhood we just described has truly become a hellhole and it is not getting better.
