A fundraiser organized by 4th District Supervisor Virginia Bass and her husband Matthew Owen is being held this Friday from 6-9 PM to raise funds for Animeals.
Animeals is the dog/cat food supplement to seniors on the Meals-On-Wheels program. “Animeals lost their major corporate sponsor last year and Matthew and I, along with a handful of other local generous contributors, have been working together to keep this program afloat while we look for options and a long term solution,” said Bass.
Claudette and Princess live in a small trailer in a low-income park. Claudette took in two cats from former Animeals clients who passed and now cares for Princess and three cats.
“Sometimes these pets are the only family these seniors have and some have actually admitted that without the program they would likely have to give away their one true friend,” said Bass. “Matthew and I just can’t stand to see that happen and we are asking the community’s help to keep this program going. ”
“We are looking for at least 100 gracious donors to donate at least $100 (or 100 pounds of dry dog/cat food) to keep this program running for the next year and that is the purpose of this fundraiser,” said Owen. For details on the fundraiser, please call Owen at (707) 599-9110. $10,000 is needed annually to run the program.
The vast majority of the recipients are shut-in seniors who have lost their spouses or significant others. The only solace and love many of these seniors have are their pets to keep them company.
You can also send your tax deductible donation to: Animeals c/o Bless the Beasts P.O. Box 268 Eureka, CA 95502 directly if you prefer or cannot attend the fundraiser.
