Second Amendment win for CA residents in most counties from the Ninth Circuit

In Baird v. Bonta,  the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that California law banning residents from openly carrying their firearms in counties with more than 200,000 was  unconstitutional and violated the 2nd amendment.

“There is no record of any law restricting open carry at the Founding, let alone ‘a distinctly similar historical regulation,’” Judge Lawrence VanDyke.

Baird did not prevail regarding permits.

I will see if I can get a comment from Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal and update the post. It is late Friday and I told him that if he rather respond on Monday, that is okay.

On Tuesday, 12/30/25, both Dylan Olivas and Jazmyne Mariah Roe aka Jazmyne Mariah Carpenter had preliminary hearings scheduled for their December 17 arrests by HCSO for operating or maintaining a drug house to sell or use meth and fentanyl.

Olivas has another 2025 case which was trailing the drug case. Pre trial in that case was continued by the Court to 1/2/26; trial confirmation for 3/4/26 and jury trial for 3/9/26.

Roe was sentenced by Humboldt Superior Court Judge Timothy Canning to 1 year probation, jail time imposed for 25 days but she was given credit for time served.

Deputy District Attorney Ian Harris is the prosecutor. Deputy Public Defender David Celli is Roe's attorney.
