Sacramento Sheriff makes the same points about mental health diversion and repeat offenders misusing the criminal justice system that I have repeatedly pointed out with Humboldt Superior Court cases

Last week, the Sacramento Sheriff's Department posted on Facebook that "gang members exploit mental health diversion."

Today, in an interview with Fox News, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper said this California law meant to help people with mental illness avoid prison is now letting violent criminals and repeat offenders walk free and called it a "terrible" policy that’s being "abused" by "career criminals."

Sheriff Cooper said mental health diversion has replaced accountability with "excuses. There’s room for diversion somewhere, especially someone that has an addiction problem. But what’s happened is they open the gates wide. So right now everyone’s taking advantage of it. A lot of criminals are. They’re really abusing the system, and that’s the unfortunate part about it."
