Fortuna police arrest Edward Loranger for possession of several illegal firearms



On July 30, 2018 Fortuna Police Problem Oriented Police (P.O.P.) Officer and Detective conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle in the 1100 block of N Street in Fortuna.

After 39 years as a litigator, Mr. Bill Barnum made his last appearance in court this afternoon



This means less suit and tie, more casual attire. Instead of litigating in court, Mr. Barnum will be handling real estate matters from his office in Old Town and working with the family timber business.

On July 29, 2018, at about 7 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 1800 block of Buhne Street in King Salmon for the report of a man brandishing a firearm and making criminal threats to a neighbor.

A status hearing on the defense motion for a new trial in the Jon Goldberg case is scheduled for this morning. The evidentiary hearing is scheduled for October 15. That date is now set for further proceedings. Evidentiary hearing is scheduled for October 17.

Former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says certain American states are drowning in debt and it will cost taxpayers.

David Casarez was homeless, he woke up from his park bench, put on a shirt and tie and held a sign in Mountainview :"Homeless Hungry 4 Success Take A Resume."

Jasmine Scofield who was driving by posted his resume on Twitter. The result, he started getting calls from Google, Pandora and others.

First District Supervisor Rex Bohn planning to go to fire ravaged counties Monday


First District Supervisor Rex Bohn is planning to cook barbeque and take supplies water to counties affected by the fires.

While firefighters are busy in the area, this fool throws a lit cigarette on US 101 south of Talmage



CALFire and CHP rescue fawn from CARR Fire



San Francisco CHP units were deployed to assist with CARR fire in Redding.  Firefighters rescued this fawn who was found wandering alone within the fire zone. Firefighters said the fawn was too close to the fire and they could not risk leaving him there until his mother returned.

CHP contacted a deer rescue organization to take care of the fawn.

Masked intruder wakes up couple to ask for wifi password, ends up getting arrested


A 17-year-old suspect woke up a Palo Alto
couple in the middle of the night. The masked intruder in their bedroom asked for their wifi password. This was his second attempt to gain wifi access over the weekend. The couple in the previous attempt told him to get lost.

Erik Neal kept saying "Sorry, my bad" and interrupting his attorney in court



Today, Erik Neal kept interrupting his attorney court, twitching and he kept saying, "Sorry my bad" over and over. He seemed fine while communicating with the court bailiffs and his attorney.

EPD asking public's help in identifying burglary and attempted sexual assault suspect




On July  25, 2018, at  about 8:00 a.m., officers with the Eureka  Police  Department responded to a  residence  on the 3300 block of Summer  Street for  the  report of a  burglary and attempted sexual assault  that had just  occurred.

DA did not file charges by today to arraign Sarah Michelle Kitchen for her new case so she was ordered to be released today


Sarah Michelle Kitchen's 2016 arraignment has been moved up from 8/24 to today at 1:28 p.m.. She was booked on the arrest warrant on that case and released on 7/20. She was arrested again a couple hours later on 7/20 for PC422, criminal threats and PC 166 (a) (4), violation of a court order. Bail $50,000.

Police helps homeless man shave after he hears why

Tallahassee Police Officer Carlson was about to get in his car when a homeless man, Phil, who was outside a gas station and asked him if he could help him fix a second hand razor the homeless man had bought.

While Officer Carlson was fixing the razor, Phil told the officer he had the opportunity to get a job at McDonald’s if he showed up with a clean shave.

State auditor's report estimates a CA DMV employee slept thousands of hours on the job


A report released today from the California auditor's office stated that a Department of Motor Vehicles employee slept thousands of hours on the job since 2014.

"The report estimates the employee slept three or more hours daily at her desk since February 2014, totaling over 2,200 hours of work time and costing more than $40,000."

Caroline Brooks filed her 501, candidate intention statement yesterday for Eureka City Council Ward 1.  So far, Anthony Mantova and Leslie Castalleno have formally announced their campaigns for that city ward.

CHP Officer Ethan Thompson, HCSO Investigator Mark Petersen and HCSO Detective Hillary Havens testified at Ronald Loureiro's preliminary hearing this morning. The People submitted one document as an exhibit.

Preliminary hearing scheduled for Orick murder suspect Ronald Loureiro on July 24 took half an hour. People presented three witnesses. Loureiro was held to answer on all charges. Victim Vernon Weatherford.

Arraignment on information is August 8.


Judge Christopher Wilson read the charges as follows:

Count 1 is murder with a special allegation: use of a deadly weapon; in this case a knife. Count 2, 3 and 4 involve three alleged victims; John Does ages 8, 6 and 2 years old. The charge for Counts 2-4 is cruelty to a child/ child endangerment.

Loureiro is also charged with three special allegations: prior strike conviction PC 245 (a) (1) assault with a deadly weapon, Humboldt County case Febrruary 2, 2007; prior strike conviction PC 245 (a) (1) Humboldt County case, November 25, 2015 and two prior serious felony convictions (these are the prior strikes)

The children who are Loureiro's biological children were in the backseat of a car and witnessed Loureiro stab Weatherford who they considered a father figure. The mother of the three Jane Does is Jacqueline Carter. She also witnessed the stabbing. Carter had a prior relationship with Loureiro. She was in a dating relationship with Weatherford.

"Whether as a result of her mental condition she is a menace to others"



Dr. Chamberlain's report for Ewa Misztal was received but setting for a hearing is scheduled for this Thursday. While both Dr. Soper and Dr. Chamberlain's opinion is that Misztal sanity has been fully restored, Dr. Chamberlain said she is a low risk. Prosecution and defense differ  on how to proceed. Defense wants outpatient treatment; prosecution is not ready to submit on the doctor's reports, yet.
