Kade Chandler held to answer on charges in the death of Kendra Lewis and Savannah Kindred

Today was the sixth day of the preliminary hearing. Kade Chandler was held to answer on the charges.

His next court date is 4/13 at 8:30 for arraignment on the information.

Kade Chandler was charged with Count 1 gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, alleged victim Kendra Lewis; Count 2 gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated; alleged victim Savannah Kindred and a special allegation of great bodily injury to Bradley 
Thueumler.

Kudos to Del Norte County DA, Probation and Judge on Roberts sentence

Thanks to Moonbeam and the moronic California lawmakers and voters who passed AB 109, Prop 47 and 57, law abiding citizens' only hope is occasional justice like this sentencing.

California should be renamed the Get out of Jail free state.

Roger Lee Roberts to serve aggregate sentence of 362 years for sexual abuse of minor

The Del Norte District Attorney's Office announced that Roger Lee Roberts (54) of Crescent City, was sentenced this afternoon to serve an aggregate sentence of 362 years to life in state prison.

On Thursday, March 30, 2017, at approximately 1454 hours, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 block of Mountain View Lane, Willow Creek for a welfare check. Suspect Kason Henry Crutchfield, age 26 was reported to be in violation of a restraining order at that address and had three felony warrants for his arrest.

Suspect allegedly fired 2 shots out of apartment window at victim.  No injuries reported, yet.

EPD set up a perimeter. Residents in the area got a reverse 911 call to shelter and stay inside.

9:25 p.m :Four people detained.

EPD finished searching residence, now checking exterior and second story of residence. One suspect, Logan Marx, still detained, not arrested, yet. Other three claim they were "just there", role being determined as they are being interviewed.

After three reschedules, expert witness testimony finally gets underway today in Kade Chandler case

Kade Chandler's preliminary hearing rescheduled for February 6 got continued to March 28. That date was vacated and a special set was scheduled for today, March 29. This is the fifth day, with three reschedules and expert witness testimony finally proceeded today.

It continues tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 1.

Former Miss Hoopa's jury trial for alleged abuse of a female minor now scheduled for June

Due to courtroom unavailability, former Miss Hoopa' jury trial for March 20 was vacated.

Brown, a former Miss Hoopa, is charged with charged with four counts of alleged abuse including abnormal sexual interest in children. Victim is a female minor.


A trial setting was scheduled for today. Trial confirmation is June 7. Jury trial is June 19.

EPD Crime Analyst Brittany Powell provided more details and some clarification on time and parties involved in yesterday's BOLO.

Scanner audio is based on information called in by reporting party. Always good to follow up.

"It was yesterday at about 5 p.m. at a bus stop near Y and 2^nd Streets.  I believe all involved parties were male.  There was a report of a fight involving a 2x4 and a hammer.  The male suspect with the 2x4 was last seen walking on Y Street.  This is an ongoing investigation."

Jury trial for McMullens shooting case will be a while

Arraignment on information was scheduled this morning for Maxx Robison in Courtroom 3. It was continued from March 8.

Robison entered not guilty pleas and denied all special allegations.

Trial setting is May 30.

Maxx Robison, is charged with the death of Rhianna Mckenzie and attempted murder of Elisha Mansell.


The arraignment on information includes 5 counts and the following special allegations:

The County of Humboldt will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, April 3 to celebrate the beginning of construction on a new Juvenile Hall facility. By replacing the current aging facility, the county can more effectively create a safe and supportive environment for young people who have entered the juvenile justice system.

Two arrested in Fortuna for alleged burglary at Fortuna High

On March 25, 2017 at approximately 8:00 am, officers responded to a building located on the Fortuna High School Campus (379 12^th Street) for a burglary alarm.  Upon arrival, officers determined that entry appeared to have been gained through a roof access.  The department K-9 Officer “Nordy” was requested and responded to assist with checking the interior of the large building. No one was located inside at that time. 

Self defense as good cause to get a concealed carry weapon permit, it could be law soon in California

California Assemblymember Melissa Melendez (67th Assembly District) introduced legislation in February to reform California’s strict “may-issue” concealed carry licensing practices.

The bill, AB 757, would amend state laws so those applying for a permit could use the desire for “self-defense, defending the life of another, or preventing crime in which human life is threatened” as sufficient reason without having to show further good cause.

Patrik Griego wins motion against Humboldt County in lawsuit regarding Public Defender

Visiting Judge Dowling granted Mr. Griego's motion for discovery finding good cause this morning, despite County's objection.

Mr. Griego asked in his motion that the process be expedited to determine whether newly hired Humboldt County Public Defender David Marcus meets the state qualfications required under Government Code 27701.

EPD still waiting on test results for Third and P death investigation of young female

Remember the Third and P death investigation from last December of the young girl at this location?

I have been following up with EPD. I was told twice by one detective who had been involved in the investigation told me toxicology reports. This was a while back.

Yesterday, I followed up with EPD Crime Analyst Brittany Powell. She said, "I checked with Detective Cosetti who is the lead on this.  We are still awaiting test results.  I’m not clear on what kind of test but I can say it is not toxicology. 

It is a lengthy process.  We will release more information on this when we are able. "

"The Correctional Deputies are underpaid and they will bargain this year for a pay increase which the Sheriff and I both FULLY support. "

First District Supervisor Rex Bohn responded to the post about correctional officers' concerns.

"Staffing in our Corrections facility is getting better but there is still a ways to go, The Sheriff and Undersheriff have dispatched senior Jail Command officers to Junior Colleges with corrections curriculum across the state doing recruitment and where this has not solved the issue they have been successful in getting new officers with this expanded recruitment efforts. "

Correctional officer Lesa Christensen sent an email to Undersheriff Billy Honsal who is expected to take over when Sheriff Michael Downey retires this May.

She told him that she was very happy he will be Sheriff, that this is not personally directed at him and that the COs just want an improvement in working conditions and that she wanted to give him a heads up that this would be going public.

Ms. Christensen told me, "The sheriff has had us on Mandatory overtime for over 2 years. We are working 50-60 hours each pay period."

The Eureka Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in locating the second suspect in a string of recent armed robberies.

Trial confirmation for Bryan Ross Main was this morning. Jury trial scheduled to start April 3.

Main was arrested for an alleged incident at the Sweet Spot in Mckinleyville involving a female minor. Main allegedly told law enforcement that he had touched the young woman on the "butt" and felt a "rush" while doing so.

In his motion requesting continued release on bail for Marci Kitchen, Mr. Benjamin Okin, takes a swipe at social media backlash being the only circumstance that has changed and why the District Attorney's office requested certain conditions on his clients's bail. And that the DA was acting out of this pressure.

It is your damn fault public for daring to question Marci Kitchen and it is the damn media's fault, especially me,  for doing our job. How dare we?

Suspects in the Tyson Claros homicide expected to have preliminary hearing this morning

The five suspects charged in the homicide of Tyson Claros started their preliminary hearing today on March 20 in Courtroom 2.

The preliminary hearing is expected to last a few, full days.


Deputy District Attorney Brie Bennett is prosecuting the case.

I will report on the outcome but I am not covering this case in detail.

Update (March 22): Preliminary concluded today. All five defendants will be arraigned on April 5.





Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal is prosecuting the case.

Humboldt County District Attorney Maggie Fleming announced that yesterday, Moises Camarillo Saldana, a 38-year-old former resident of Fortuna, pled guilty to committing sexual intercourse with a child ten years of age or younger and oral copulation of a child under 16 years, both felonies under California Penal Code Section 288.

Fortuna traffic stop results in arrest; suspect charged with having shotgun, nunchaku and brass knuckles

On March 16^th, 2017  2:30 pm, Fortuna Police Department officer performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on 12^th Street near Dinsmore Drive for a traffic violation. While officers were speaking with the driver, they observed what appeared to be the stock of a firearm sticking out from the back seat area. The firearm was partially concealed by other items in the rear seat.

After numerous continuances and delays, Sohum upskirting suspect David Nunez's case is finally set for jury trial.

Trial setting was yesterday. Trial confirmation is June 7 at 1:30 p.m and Jury trial is scheduled for June 19 at 9:45 a.m.

What Marci wants, Marci gets; Judge Wilson grants ridiculous request for out of state travel despite objection from DA

Another last minute hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m this morning for Marci Kitchen.

The first last minute hearing was held this Monday and Kitchen was asked to surrender her passport to the court within 48 hours. She did.

Kitchen is charged with two counts. One of the victims in the complaint filed is her own daughter.

Joe Kitchen was in court today with friends.

Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads told Judge Christopher Wilson that "the People oppose the request for out of state travel to attend her partner's grandma's birthday party. " Ms. Eads said the People did not feel this reason "justified the risk of" jeopardizing Kitchen's future court appearances.

Despite objection, Judge Wilson granted the request for travel to Oregon.

In fact, he asked if attorneys could stipulate to out of state travel. If not, he would decide on a case by case basis. He also agreed to seal all her future travel records and itinerary.

From a quick look at computer records, it seems Marci Kitchen's attorneys filed an objection to request for terms. I am assuming this refers to Kitchen's surrender of passport.

The defense also filed an order shortening time.

The DA filed an opposition.

Alan A.Cook is someone I am familiar with from covering courts.

This guy knows the system, represented himself, got a plea deal and since then has been a frequent name in the jail reports of daily arrests.

Marci Kitchen had until today to surrender her passport; did she?

Marci Kitchen had 48 hours from her 10:15 hearing this Monday to surrender her passport to the Court.

Did she? Yes she has.

One of her attorneys, Mr. Patrik Griego, said, "Yes. She has complied with all conditions of release on bond."

Mr. Griego joined as co counsel later. Initially, her attorney of record was only Mr. Benjamin Okin. Mr. Griego has been very prompt in responding to all media inquiries.
