HCSO press release (issued 9/23/26):
On October 20, 2026, 35-year-old Carl Krystopher Keeler of Eureka was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on multiple charges, including several counts of possession of a controlled substance. Due to the nature of the charges and Keeler’s prior history of bringing narcotics into the jail, correctional deputies utilized the facility’s full-body scanner to screen for concealed contraband. During the scan, deputies discovered illegal drugs on Keeler’s person and observed an additional mass concealed inside a body cavity.
Keeler was placed in a holding cell for observation. On October 21, 2026, at approximately 10:51 a.m., jail medical staff evaluated Keeler and recommended he be transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment to facilitate the removal of the concealed contraband. Deputies transported him to a local hospital for treatment.
During Keeler’s medical treatment at the hospital, deputies recovered approximately 23 grams of methamphetamine and a small amount of fentanyl. Upon medical clearance, he was transported back to HCCF and booked on an additional felony charge (PC 4573.6), Bringing Narcotics into a Jail Facility.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of the Humboldt County Correctional Facility by preventing illegal drugs and other contraband from entering the facility. Full-body scanning technology and established contraband detection procedures are critical tools in protecting the health and well-being of incarcerated individuals and correctional staff, while helping prevent the distribution and misuse of dangerous substances inside the jail.
Smuggling illegal substances into a correctional facility is not only a crime but also poses a serious risk to human life. Concealed narcotics can cause life-threatening medical emergencies and have resulted in deaths. The Humboldt County Correctional Facility routinely utilizes full-body scanning technology, along with other established screening and detection methods, to identify and prevent the introduction of illegal substances and other contraband into the facility.
